               What is Bursitis?
-Dr. Jeff

Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursae sac.  Anytime a tendon runs over a tendon or a tendon runs over a bone you have a little sac of fluid called a bursae sac.  With movement this sac gets squished and lubricates the area.  For some reason a bursae sac can get irritated and swells up in size.  This usually comes on suddenly and could be due to trauma, illness, over use or just bad luck.  Because the bursae sac swells it becomes larger and creates pressure in the area and this leads to pain.  When you hurt a muscle, you can test it to find out which muscle you injured because you know what that muscle does.  With a bursitis, pretty well all the motions of that joint hurt.  This helps the doctor differentiate between a muscle strain and a bursitis.   Best home remedy for bursitis is ice and rest.  You can take an anti-inflammatory by mouth or by applying a topical cream.  If it is not improving, modalities such as ultrasound, interferential current (IFC) and laser can help.  Worst case scenario and as a last resort a cortisone shot.  These are not done as often as in years gone by since new research has found that the use of steroid shots leads to early joint arthritis.  Generally, a bursitis disappears as fast as it came.  If you have any questions or concerns about bursitis, you can always email one of the Practitioner’s in the office or book an appointment to come in for an assessment and treatment.

What is the TMJ and TMJ Disorder?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, or commonly known as your jaw. When people have problems with the muscles and structures that surround the jaw, we classify it as “TMJD” - Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or “TMD” which stands for “Temporomandibular Disorder” or “Temporomandibular Dysfunction”.

Most people say they “have TMJ” which simply means they have a jaw joint. TMJ is not a diagnosis!

Typical signs and symptoms that can indicate if you can have TMD include:
  • Headaches
  • Ear pain
  • Stuffy ears
  • Vertigo
  • Tinnitus
  • Hearing loss
  • Neck Pain
  • Jaw Pain
  • Tooth Pain
  • Tingling in Face

Most people that have had TMD for a while can also exhibit these symptoms:
  • Crackling
  • Snapping
  • Episodes of the jaw locking or catching
  • Clicking and popping

What can cause TMD?

The usual and obvious cause of TMD is direct blunt trauma but most of the patients we see have TMD because of poor posture, breathing, and chewing habits.
Of course we like to rule out any other causes such as cavities, ear infection, neurological diseases etc by having you see your dentist, oral surgeon, ENT doctor, family physician, optometrist.

Treating the TMJ includes a comprehensive neck and spine exam, TMJ and cranial exam, along with pertinent exercises to ensure all are functioning correctly. You’d be surprised to see how the cranial bones, sinus cavities, spine and muscles can cause that little high pitched ringing!

Fragrances, Scents and Aromas

Did you know that there are scent families? To find what scent is your cup of tea, let's talk about the different types of fragrances! There are four main families of scents them being; Fresh, Woody, Oriental and Floral. Fragrances that are categorized under the fresh family include citrus-based, aquatic and green smells. These scents are refreshing, zesty and vibrant such as lemon, sea spray or herbal leafy scents. Woody scents are popular in aftershaves and smell like cedarwood and sandalwood. They often give off a smoky, leathery smell with sweet undertones. In the oriental family, the scents are warm, sweet, rich and a little spicy. Oriental scents are often made with cardamom, cinnamon and vanilla. Lastly is probably the most popular group of scents, floral. This is a broad family, encompassing sweet and flowery scents like roses, lilies and peonies.

Fragrances are created using perfume oil and alcohol, therefore, the greater the percentage of perfume oil used, the stronger and longer the fragrance will last.

You can also consider combining scents. These scent families and their sub-categories can be found on a scent wheel. Much like the colour wheel, scents that are closer located beside each other on the wheel will have a higher chance of blending well together when used in combination. Likewise, you could also try combining scents that are found on opposite sides of the wheel. For instance, soft oriental scents are located opposite to citrus scents. Therefore, in theory these two scent groups should complement each other well.

Some experts have suggested that what smells you are attracted to, is what your body is craving or needs.  Essential oils can lift your mood and make you feel good with just a whiff of their fragrance. For some people they may even help alleviate the symptoms of various conditions.  For more information on how to incorporate them into a healthy lifestyle, consult an integrative medicine expert.

  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup red lentils - uncooked
  • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2/3 cup canned unsweetened coconut milk
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Roasted cashews for garnish
  • Chopped cilantro and/or scallions for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
  • Melt the butter in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the onion, carrot, and jalapeno, then saute for 4 to 5 minutes or until the onions have softened.
  • Add the garlic, ginger, apples, and diced tomatoes to the pot. Saute for another 3 minutes, then add in all of the spices and toss to coat. Add in the lentils and broth and let the contents come to a boil. Turn the heat down to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • Puree about 75% of the ingredients using either an immersion blender or by transferring a portion of the contents to the bowl of a standard blender. Leave some of the chunks whole, as it adds a nice texture and consistency to the soup. Return the soup to the pot if needed, then stir in the coconut milk. Taste, and adjust salt and black pepper as needed.
