Osteopathy in post COVID-19 recovery
-
Andrzej Bugiel PT, M.OMSc

Corona virus has affected and continues to affect many of us. The majority of COVID patients experience relatively mild symptoms and recover quickly with no apparent lasting damage. Some feel sick for weeks or months after the immediate infection, and a small number have symptoms that just drag on and on even though they no longer have the active virus. Yes, the body unfortunately needs time to heal after contracting the virus.  On the other hand, the patient may alternatively seek Osteopathic treatment for a faster way to recovery.  The underlying principle on which Osteopathy is built is that, under normal circumstances our bodies fix themselves and therefore, if the body is not fixing itself then something is preventing those normal healing processes from taking place. The Osteopath’s aim is to find those barriers to healing, do something to remove them and let the body get on with fixing itself.   The Osteopathic approach to treat post COVID patients is to look at everything we can that isn’t working properly. We aim to work globally, looking beyond the problem area to ensure every aspect is looked after.  An obvious example is breathing and coughing.  When you cough a lot, you use the diaphragm repeatedly.  Sometimes this is too much for your body to handle and the diaphragm itself becomes painful and the ribs to which it attaches may get irritated at the joints where they attach to the spine and cause problems with breathing.  As a result, some post COVID patients have symptoms relating to mechanical problem affecting the breathing mechanics. There are many other symptoms of long COVID-19: chest pain or tightness, difficulty sleeping, heart palpitation, dizziness, pins and needles, depression, and anxiety, feeling sick, diarrhea, stomach aches, loss of appetite, rashes, fatigue, and muscle tension as well as more specific symptoms such as costochondritis. Costochondritis is an inflammation right where ribs join the bone (sternum) in the middle of your chest. It is benign inflammation of the upper costochondral (rib to cartilage) and sternocostal (cartilage to sternum) joints. Osteopathic treatment will depend on the symptoms but will include doming of the thoracic diaphragm.  This encourages the muscle back to its initial shape, and baseline function.  Increasing the length of surrounding muscles that have become contracted and shortened in length via manual therapy and/or exercise will improve blood flow and function.  Treating the fascia of muscles will improve skeletal muscle immobility and will decrease pain by relaxing contracted muscles.  This will increase your energy levels and improve digestion by improving cavity pressures between the abdomen and lungs to ensure congestion and toxic environment are avoided. Breathing exercises alongside treating the thoracic cage, including the sternum, can not only promote a healthier body but also reduce stress and anxiety.  Posterior rib rising normalizes the sympathetic nervous system and enhances chest wall mobility.  Muscle energy techniques will help improve accessory respiratory muscle movement, balance ligamentous tension, and facilitated positional release to help ligaments and soft tissue return to the normal physiologic range.  Suboccipital release targets the vagus nerve to normalize parasympathetic tone and influence swallowing, thoracic and abdominal visceral activity.  Cranial therapy places strain pattern within a skull, into a position of relaxation. Drainage techniques include sinuses drainage which help clear sinuses. The lymphatic system is a secondary circulatory system supporting immune response maintaining the body’s homeostasis and improves food balance.  This is an important part of body’s system to help in post COVID recovery by removing waste, bacteria, and toxins from bodily tissue. Lymphatic techniques allow nerves, arteries, veins, and lymphatic to work properly.  The Miller lymphatic pump and the pedal (feet) lymphatic pump mobilizes lymph movement throughout the body or immune respond in patients with varying symptoms. Additionally, education of body mechanics, posture, and activity modification will complete the treatment.

Did the use of Masks reduce the spread of Covid 19?

Now that the pandemic is over 2 years old, we can look back and study on whether the use of masks actually reduced the spread of Covid.  The simple answer is yes.  A study was done in 2021 in Bangladesh by a group from Stanford and Yale University’s.  They took 600 similar sized villages and divided them into 2.  One group of 300 received surgical masks and the other did not.  In the group that received the masks, those 50 years old and over had a 23% decrease in illness and the 60 and over group had a 35% decrease compared to the similar group in the villages that did not receive any masks.  During and Covid outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, persons who wore masks experienced a 70% lower risk of testing positive for Covid. Here in Canada, there was a 20-40% decrease dependent on where you lived in transmission numbers following the mask mandates.  Some areas were more prone to follow the guidelines than other areas.  Did masks reduce the spread of Covid, it appears so.

ASK THE GIRLS

This is when I usually give you some great tips about your health or décor idea’s, lol.
Today I am going  to take the opportunity to say goodbye to the friends, patients and clients that have come to mean so much to me here at Goldsworthy.   Sadly, Friday October 28th was my last day here at Goldsworthy Wellness as I have moved on to an exciting new adventure.
To the patients, I will miss the chats that we have shared about anything and everything.  Getting to know you and your families, sharing happy and sad life events.  I will miss the silly banter with some of our crazier clients, (Chuck).  I have six years of memories that will stay with me forever.
To my co-workers that have become friends, thank you for putting up with my silliness during holiday seasons and my questioning of everything that you do.
It’s not the end, I have offered to help when they need coverage for holidays or illness and of course I will be here for regular wellness appointments.
It’s sad to go but remember my favourite quote “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you can’t laugh at others!”
Now go out and put on a festive headband and make someone smile!
