Plagiocephaly, Torticollis and Chiropractic

Have you ever seen a baby with a cone head due to birth trauma? Or a baby that only looks one way and tilts to the side? Even though these conditions are very common, did you know that they are not normal and do not fully resolve on their own? Sometimes mild physical appearances can get better on its own but issues left untreated can lead to delays in milestone development (ie. crawling, walking, talking, balance etc), and cranium related disorders such as difficulty speaking, sinus and TMJ complications.

What is torticollis and how is it related to plagiocephaly?
Torticollis is when the baby’s natural head position is altered due to abnormally tight muscles that pull the head down towards the ear and chest. Reasons for this can vary, but some include:
-abnormal/cramped position in the womb
-breech position
-forceps or vacuum delivery

Plagiocephaly is commonly known as “flat head syndrome” where there is a spot on the head that is flatter than normal which causes the other side of the head to be bigger. It can also present as one side of the forehead looking like it protrudes out in front more, facial asymmetry such as jaw misalignment, ear lobes not at the same level, eyes that are a different size, etc., or if you simply stand and take a bird’s eye view at the top of your baby’s head, one side of the head is a different shape than the other. If your baby has torticollis, there is a 9 in 10 chance that they also have some type of plagiocephaly.

Why can this be an issue for my baby?

When a baby has their head tilted to one side and has difficulty looking the other way, breastfeeding and bottle feeding can be a challenge. The inability of latching and feeding on one particular breast can affect mom’s milk supply. They may sleep with their head tilted to one side and further cause the flatness to develop on their head. If left untreated, developmental milestones such as sitting, crawling, rolling over, standing, walking can be delayed and/or be difficult to complete. Think about walking with your head tilted and rotated to the right side - your sense of balance will be altered and cause you to fall over!
Now, when a baby has a “cone head” or plagiocephaly (or generally a misshaped head), cranial issues can arise as well. There are many different bones that make up your head and face so if you see one side differently than the other, something in their cranium isn’t aligned properly. If left untreated, speech can be affected, sinus formation (so chronic sinus issues as an adult can be found) and jaw/eating movements are altered.

The good news is that all of this is treatable! Chiropractors can align and move spinal joints to help muscles work the way they should. Also an assessment as to which muscles that need to be stretched out (and in the correct direction) will be prescribed. Specifically with plagiocephaly, internal palate and cranial assessment will be evaluated to see how to shift each cranial bone in order to help with proper development as the baby gets stronger and bigger.

Why does my massage therapist treat areas of my body that I don’t feel pain or discomfort in?

When someone comes in with pain or discomfort, they often wonder why other areas are being treated during their massage session.  There are many reasons to address other areas of the body. Some people may have trigger points which are sensitive areas of tight muscle fibers which can form in your muscles. Often trigger points can refer pain which affects different parts of your body.  For example,  at the top of your shoulder blade/scapula the trigger point here can sometimes refer and cause headache-like pain. It can also cause deep achy pain at the top of the shoulder and along the shoulder blade or even cause painful movement. Keeping with this example,  your posture when you sit at a computer may cause your shoulders to roll forward, tightening your upper chest muscles.  This may also create tightness in your ribs and the muscles in between the ribs, the intercostals. Additionally, these areas would be treated. There could be other factors such as a repetitive movement, an injury, etc. So when your massage includes more areas of the body, we are treating the source or cause of pain and the site of pain to give you the optimal result for healing.

Creamy Artichoke Sauce
(super easy, vegan, lemony)
(makes 3-4 servings with 6-8 ounces of pasta)
  • 1 jar or can artichoke hearts in water drained (10–12 ounces … about 1 ½ cups) or use frozen
  • 3/4 cup veg. broth
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 10 fresh sage leaves (or sub 1/4 cup Italian parsley, or fresh basil)
  • (Note: I used ¼ cup fresh basil)
  • 1–2 garlic cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt, more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon cracked pepper
  • I did not add lemon because the artichoke were in oil but if it were canned I would add lemon to taste
  • For added depth to the artichoke sauce, add a teaspoon of miso or nutritional yeast– totally optional.(Note: I added 1 Tbsp of nutritional yeast)
  •
For the sauce: Simply put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Serving suggestion: While pasta is boiling, cook up 8 oz of sliced mushrooms with olive oil, salt and pepper.  Drain pasta but do not rinse with cold water. Add to mushrooms and stir. Add artichoke sauce and gently heat.
When serving you can add parmesan, grated cheese (if adding cheese it will no longer be vegan), truffle oil, or chili flakes
Other vegetables to use...asparagus, snap peas, peppers, butternut squash
